It claims that most women in the state do not want the vote, so if voting men gave women suffrage, they would be doing so against their will. \u00a0This, they claim, would be undemocratic. \u00a0 This sounds ironic, but it makes sense in a world where men were suppose to be women&#8217;s political representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The ad then goes on to try to demonize those women who do want the right to vote by associating them with other groups widely stigmatized at that time: feminists, of course, but also socialists, Mormons, and members of the I.W.W. The acronym stands for Industrial Workers of the World, an organization founded in 1905 as an alternative to the American Federation of Labor, reportedly consisting of anarchists, socialists, and union members (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IWW#Founding\" target=\"_blank\">wiki<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Women in Massachusetts would be granted the right to vote on this day, August 18th, five years later, not by the residents of the state, but by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/featured_documents\/amendment_19\/\" target=\"_blank\">Federal decree<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32452\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/1.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/08\/1-333x500.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2011\/01\/13\/why-women-shouldnt-b.html\" target=\"_blank\">BoingBoing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
