Here is the front cover of the Botox pamphlet:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/botox1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3233 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/botox1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"1089\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had seen the (ironic) &#8220;Freedom of Expression&#8221; tagline before (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/05\/sarah-haskins-on-botox\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/15\/lies-in-advertising\/\">here<\/a>). But I hadn&#8217;t previously seen the &#8220;Men and women of all skin colors and ethnicities are enjoying the freedom!&#8221; line.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two images found side-by-side inside the brochure:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/botox21.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3235 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/botox21-160x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/botox31.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3237 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/botox31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"1127\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice the text under the question &#8220;Who is being treated with BOTOX Cosmetic?&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Men and women of varying ethnicities have been treated with BOTOX Cosmetic. Because it works only on the underlying muscles, it is not expected to affect skin color.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I had no idea there was any concern that Botox might affect skin color. Anyway, apparently Botox is making an active effort to market to &#8220;varying ethnicities,&#8221; represented in the brochure as White and Black.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three pages from the Restylane pamphlet, all answering the question, &#8220;Why do I use Restylane?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/restylane11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3240 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/restylane11-137x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To look good&#8230;even in fluorescent lighting!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/restylane2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3239 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/restylane2-136x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To lose these wrinkles&#8230;and my inhibitions!&#8221; (Which apparently means riding a mechanical bull.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/restylane3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3241 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/restylane3-134x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To hide my real age&#8230;because he thinks I&#8217;m younger than I am!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, those last two sound like parodies of how these procedures would be marketed. I don&#8217;t know which one creeps me out more: the connection between getting Restylane and being freed of inhibitions, or the complete normalization of the idea that a woman should lie to a man about how old she is (because what could make for a happier relationship than lying?) and spend money to keep him from finding out the truth, and that if he found out, he presumably wouldn&#8217;t love her anymore&#8230;not because she lied, but because she&#8217;s <em>too old<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Restylane is not used by people of varying ethnicities, because everyone in the pamphlet is White.<\/p>\n<p>I also think it&#8217;s really creepy that these brochures were available at a doctor&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, Samantha!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samantha J. brought me two brochures she saw at a doctor&#8217;s office the other day, one for Botox Cosmetic and one for Restylane.
