{"id":32182,"date":"2011-01-17T10:26:32","date_gmt":"2011-01-17T15:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=32182"},"modified":"2013-11-19T04:31:51","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T09:31:51","slug":"female-circumcision-endorsed-in-a-vintage-playgirl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/17\/female-circumcision-endorsed-in-a-vintage-playgirl\/","title":{"rendered":"Female Circumcision Endorsed in a Vintage PlayGirl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Capture9.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32187\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2011\/01\/Capture9.jpg\" width=\"481\" height=\"107\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nMany Americans are familiar with &#8220;female genital mutilation.&#8221; \u00a0The term is typically applied to practices occurring\u00a0in some parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, but not to genital cutting practices that happen in the U.S. and other Western societies (including cosmetic surgeries on the genitals, surgeries on children with ambiguous genitalia, and transsexual surgery) and, by definition, not to genital cutting practices that happen to men in both Western and non-Western countries (male circumcision and other rare but more extreme practices). \u00a0&#8220;Female genital mutilation&#8221; elsewhere, then, is widely condemned by Americans, but rarely condemned <em>in light of<\/em> these other genital cutting practices, nor America&#8217;s own history of genital cutting. \u00a0In fact, it was not unusual to subject women in the U.S. to proper circumcision (removal of the clitoral prepuce, or foreskin) until the 1960s and these procedures remained legal until 1996 (though, as far as I&#8217;m concerned, their legality is still up in the air).<\/p>\n<p>In any case,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/rabbitwrite\" target=\"_blank\">RabbitWrite<\/a> gives us a glimpse into this era in American history. Reading from a <em>Playgirl <\/em>published in 1973, she recounts the confessions of a woman who chose to be circumcised and offers a short critique.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"480\" height=\"385\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/LCLLox_amD8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
