\nThese images resonate with readers, I think, because they are so damn familiar. \u00a0They are a good example of advertising in general. \u00a0They practically beg: “Please please please think it is fun to eat salad!” \u00a0And they insist: “Eating salad will make you haaaaappppppyyyyy!” \u00a0Much advertising today needs to convince you that the product will make you happy because we don’t need <\/em>almost anything we buy. \u00a0Necessity lost out to desire in marketing a long time ago.<\/p>\nLisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
