This decal was on the front of a calendar, touting it as &#8220;eco-positive&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/IMG_0037.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31853 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/IMG_0037-425x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/IMG_0037-425x500.jpg 425w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/IMG_0037-871x1024.jpg 871w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/IMG_0037.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What was eco-positive (a term that has no real meaning or standards) about it? Was it made from recycled paper? No. Maybe some statement about non-toxic ink? Nope. It&#8217;s eco-positive because they used the scraps from producing the calendar to make you a very special gift&#8230;two bookmarks tucked inside the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m all for using scrap material, but that alone seems to be a pretty minor detail upon which to then market the entire product as an\u00a0 &#8220;eco-positive&#8221; one, especially given that paper scraps from manufacturing processes are often reused already (notice how often paper products say they&#8217;re recycled from &#8220;pre-consumer&#8221; waste).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently saw a great example of greenwashing &#8212; that is, marketing a product as eco-friendly based on questionable or rather superficial characteristics of the production process.
