{"id":31650,"date":"2011-01-03T10:07:30","date_gmt":"2011-01-03T15:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=31650"},"modified":"2013-11-19T04:43:26","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T09:43:26","slug":"differential-downward-mobility-between-black-and-whites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/03\/differential-downward-mobility-between-black-and-whites\/","title":{"rendered":"Differential Downward Mobility Between Black and Whites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kai Wright at <a href=\"http:\/\/colorlines.com\/archives\/2010\/12\/the_shrinking_black_middle_class.html\" target=\"_blank\">Colorlines<\/a> discusses an &#8220;arresting&#8221; graph demonstrating downward class mobility among black and whites. \u00a0The bars represent the proportion of parents&#8217; children that end up in the bottom fifth of income earners by race and income of the parent. \u00a0On the far left, you see that 31% of whites and 54% of blacks born into the bottom fifth remain the bottom fifth. \u00a0Poor black children, then, are more likely than poor white children to stay poor.<\/p>\n<p>The remainder of the bars represent downward mobility. \u00a0You can see that, in every case, black children are more likely to be poor as adults than white children, no matter what class they were born into. \u00a0Among those born into the middle fifth, the statistically middle class, 16% of whites and 45% of blacks end up in the bottom fifth of income earners. \u00a0For the richest white Americans, the chance of ending up poor is statistically zero; while nearly one in ten of black children born rich will end up poor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/120.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31653\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/120.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/120.jpg 640w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/120-500x428.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wright summarizes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;economic mobility is not the same for everybody in America, and to the degree we can talk about a genuine black middle class, it\u2019s not a terribly secure one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
