{"id":31142,"date":"2011-01-14T10:00:48","date_gmt":"2011-01-14T15:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=31142"},"modified":"2013-11-19T04:34:21","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T09:34:21","slug":"portraying-athletes-his-and-hers-sports-illustrated-covers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/14\/portraying-athletes-his-and-hers-sports-illustrated-covers\/","title":{"rendered":"His and Hers Sports Illustrated Covers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve posted before on the tendency for female, but not male, athletes to be featured in glamorous or sexualized ways that highlight their femininity instead of their athleticism. \u00a0See, for example, our posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/21\/female-athletes-be-pretty-but-not-sexy-or-pregnant\/\" target=\"_self\">WNBA player Candace Parker<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/29\/feminizing-womens-sports-teams\/\" target=\"_self\">the Florida State University\u2019s women\u2019s basketball team<\/a>. \u00a0Kirsten W. sent in another nice example. \u00a0In this case, it&#8217;s two tennis players at the height of their careers: Roger Federer and Anna Kournikova.<\/p>\n<p>Federer is pictured as we might expect, doing what he is famous for doing, playing tennis:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/113.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31145\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/113.jpg\" width=\"319\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/113.jpg 570w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/113-366x500.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/vault\/gallery\/featured\/GAL1156601\/2\/9\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Kournikova is pictured like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/210.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31147\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/210.jpg\" width=\"319\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/210.jpg 442w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/12\/210-372x500.jpg 372w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/88163160\/Sports-Illustrated\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>[Kournikova]&#8230; is presented in a\u00a0very typical \u201cfemale\u201d way, with her long hair down (it would generally be pulled\u00a0during a game), flowing over a pink frilly nightgown that suggests she\u2019s in bed, and\u00a0potentially waiting for company.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2000 when this issue of <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em> was released, Kournikova was on fire. \u00a0 She was ranked 8th in singles and 4th in doubles&#8230; in the world. \u00a0Yet, <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em> decided to portray her not as an amazing athlete, but softly: as a beautiful, perhaps receptive woman.<\/p>\n<p>Later Kournikova would abandon tennis for modeling. \u00a0Many argue that she did so because she failed as a tennis player, I wonder if she went into modeling, in part, because her appearance made people take her less seriously as an athlete.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
