Originally cross-po<\/em><em>sted at <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5709519\/prince-charles-and-the-myth-of-taller-men\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the U.S. and the U.K., one of the most unbreakable rules of mating involves height. He must be taller than her, preferably significantly taller. Men and women often pick one another in such a way that any given couple follows this rule even if, given random assortment, some couples would involve women who the same height or taller than their male partners.<\/p>\n<p>Rumor has it, though I can&#8217;t prove it, that Hollywood routinely puts leading men in platform boots or on stools so that they appear appropriately tall relative to their leading ladies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/11\/18\/the-royal-heads-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philip Cohen<\/a>, however, alerted me to a case that can be nicely shown: Prince Charles and Princess Diana. \u00a0As these photographs show, Charles was about the same height as Diana, perhaps even shorter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2008\/11\/10\/article-1084451-0085131C00000258-621_468x442.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"354\" \/>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1084451\/Charles-detectives-radioed-ahead-check-boiled-eggs-cooked-properly-reveals-royal-chef.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Mail<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When Charles and Diana were posed together formally, however, they were typically arranged so as to suggest that he was significantly taller than her, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A photo from their engagement announcement with Charles on a step behind her:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/38941000\/jpg\/_38941505_charlesdi238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"178\" \/>(<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/onthisday\/hi\/dates\/stories\/february\/24\/newsid_2516000\/2516759.stm\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And more:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/11\/charlesdianastamp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"345\" \/>(<a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/11\/18\/the-royal-heads-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>This effort to make Charles appear taller is a <em>social <\/em>commitment to the idea that men are taller and women shorter.
