Federal Election Commission<\/em>). \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/outsidespending\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Open Secrets<\/a> produced two figures revealing the rise in &#8220;outside spending&#8221; (i.e., non-party spending) showing the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Total outside spending:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/25.jpg\" width=\"523\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Outside spending for liberals and conservatives:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/112.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29003\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/112.jpg\" width=\"554\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/112.jpg 693w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/112-500x177.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open Secrets explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the 2004 election marked a watershed moment in the use of independent expenditures to try to sway voters, with most of that new spending coming from the national party committees. \u00a0The 2010 election marks the rise of a new political committee, dubbed &#8220;super PACs,&#8221; and officially known as &#8220;independent-expenditure only committees,&#8221; which can raise unlimited sums from corporations, unions and other groups, as well as wealthy individuals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hermesjourneys.blogspot.com\/2010\/11\/change-is-only-constant.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hermes&#8217; Journeys<\/a> editorializes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can see that liberals slightly outspent conservatives every election since 1996. Except for this year, when quite suddenly a mysterious flood of funding caused conservative campaign coffers to skyrocket, DOUBLING what liberals could muster. Was this the result of concerned right-leaning citizens becoming active in politics and making individual donations? \u00a0Of course not, it was profit-minded corporations&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;enabled, if I may finished HJ&#8217;s sentence, by the recent court decision.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
