{"id":28922,"date":"2010-12-09T10:19:52","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T15:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=28922"},"modified":"2013-11-23T03:50:47","modified_gmt":"2013-11-23T08:50:47","slug":"comparing-increases-in-u-s-corrections-and-higher-education-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/12\/09\/comparing-increases-in-u-s-corrections-and-higher-education-spending\/","title":{"rendered":"Comparing Increases in U.S. Corrections and Higher Education Spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/02\/1-in-31\/\" target=\"_self\">number of Americans under correctional control has more than tripled<\/a> since the 1980s, up to 1 in 31 U.S. citizens. \u00a0And <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/27\/some-trends-in-imprisonment\/\" target=\"_self\">the U.S. incarcerates six times more of its citizens than many European countries<\/a>. \u00a0As you might imagine, this is very expensive. \u00a0Between 1987 and 2007, the amount spent on corrections increased by 127%. \u00a0To put this in perspective, the amount spent on higher education has only increased 21%.<\/p>\n<p>The Pew Center <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http:\/\/www.pewcenteronthestates.org\/uploadedFiles\/8015pcts_Prison08_final_2-1-1_Forweb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">illustrates the disparity<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/Capture1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28930\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/Capture1.jpg\" width=\"364\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>States varied in the ratio of corrections to college spending. \u00a0The dark green bars (Vermont, Michigan, Oregon, Connecticut, and Delaware) are for states that spend as much or more on <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">higher education than corrections<\/span> corrections as on higher education The rest spend less. \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Minnesota has the most extreme ratio; it spent 17 cents on higher education for every dollar it spent on corrections<\/span>.
