Funded by <a href=\"www.cagw.org\" target=\"_blank\">Citizens Against Government Waste<\/a>, it features a future in which China has succeeded the United States as the world&#8217;s super power. It is supposed to frighten the reader by forecasting a world in which China rules America (cue ominous music and satisfied evil chuckling).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"480\" height=\"385\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/OTSQozWP-rM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>What is interesting to me is the assumption that drives the commercial: that the U.S. <em>should <\/em>be a super power, that it is <em>naturally <\/em>so (so long as it sticks to its founding principles), and that it would be <em>wrong <\/em>for China to be more powerful than the U.S. \u00a0 The idea that self-satisfied <em>Asian <\/em>people would be in charge adds racist oomph to the threat.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
