{"id":28467,"date":"2010-11-07T10:52:25","date_gmt":"2010-11-07T15:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=28467"},"modified":"2013-12-02T23:26:58","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T04:26:58","slug":"corporate-prescription-of-gender-conformity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/11\/07\/corporate-prescription-of-gender-conformity\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate Prescription of Gender Conformity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve documented dozens of instances in which products are coded with gender (e.g., with colors and patterns) but sometimes, as in the example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/11\/a-cop-car-for-you-little-police-boy\/\" target=\"_self\">a toy cop car<\/a>, it is specified that items are\u00a0for girls or for boys.\u00a0 More than simply following gendered themes and allowing us to <em>infer <\/em>their meaning, these items offer a gendered <em>prescription <\/em>for use.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly, for example, sent in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jcpenney.com\/jcp\/X6.aspx?DeptID=77797&amp;CatID=77797&amp;Grptyp=PRD&amp;ItemId=196ce8f&amp;cm_mmc=ShoppingFeed-_-Amazon-_-Toys-_-Hello%20Kitty%20Sewing%20Machine&amp;srccode=cii_23393768&amp;cpncode=25-3577706-2\" target=\"_blank\">JC Penney page<\/a> for a Hello Kitty sewing machine that specifies that it is for girls (it was also specified as for girls at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.target.com\/Hello-Kitty-Stitch-Sewing-Machine\/dp\/B001E8ZXGI\/ref=sc_qi_detaillink\" target=\"_blank\">Target<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28473\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/1.jpg\" width=\"518\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/1.jpg 642w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/1-500x453.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Coley L. bought a shorts-and-shirt swimsuit for a daughter.\u00a0 The green swimsuit, however, was labeled explicitly for boys:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/4.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28474\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/4.jpeg\" width=\"291\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/4.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/4-375x500.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And MP sent in a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timbuk2.com\/tb2\/products\/gift-certificates?category=84&amp;skuset=43&amp;productId=542&amp;sizeOptIdx=0&amp;colorwayOptIdx=0&amp;shoppingMode=size-disabled&amp;quantity=1\" target=\"_blank\">downloadable foldable gift card holder<\/a> that specified whether it was for him or her in the url:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28475\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/2.jpg\" width=\"454\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/2.jpg 763w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/2-500x461.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28476\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/3.jpg\" width=\"454\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/3.jpg 762w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/11\/3-500x461.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
