{"id":28247,"date":"2010-10-20T10:05:37","date_gmt":"2010-10-20T15:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=28247"},"modified":"2013-12-02T23:38:27","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T04:38:27","slug":"the-promise-and-perils-of-ethnic-enclaves-asian-unemployment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/10\/20\/the-promise-and-perils-of-ethnic-enclaves-asian-unemployment\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethnic Enclaves, Linguistic Segregation, and Asian Unemployment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=130408243\" target=\"_blank\">a story on NPR<\/a>, Asian Americans are less likely to be unemployed than White, Black, and Hispanic Americans.\u00a0 But, when they do lose a job, they remain unemployed significantly longer.<\/p>\n<p>Jobless Rates by Race:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/1.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28250\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/1.gif\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/1.gif 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/1-150x150.gif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Length of Unemployment:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/2.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28251\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/2.gif\" width=\"300\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why might Asians have a more difficult time finding work?\u00a0 Kent Wong of\u00a0 UCLA&#8217;s Center for Labor Research and Education explains that their extended length of unemployment can be attributed to a confluence of two realities that make their situation unique.\u00a0 First,about 70% of Asian Americans are foreign born and these immigrants often live in ethnic enclaves (e.g., Chinatowns) that focus on a single industry.\u00a0 So long as there is work in that industry, Asians can find work.\u00a0 But, if that industry goes south, their limited network outside of those enclaves becomes a hindrance.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Asians (unlike Whites, Hispanics, and Blacks) tend to be segregated by language.\u00a0 Wong explains that, with about a dozen languages spoken widely in the Asian American community, pan-ethnic networks can be difficult to build and maintain.\u00a0 This leads to extra difficulty finding a new job:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you have a Vietnamese employee working for a Vietnamese employer in Little Saigon in Orange County, that does not transfer to an ability to get a job in Koreatown in Los Angeles&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both residential and linguistic segregation, then, contribute to long periods of unemployment for Asian Americans.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
