{"id":28203,"date":"2010-10-19T10:49:37","date_gmt":"2010-10-19T15:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=28203"},"modified":"2013-12-02T23:38:48","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T04:38:48","slug":"conspicuous-cause-support-goodyear-encourages-you-to-donate-buy-their-tires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/10\/19\/conspicuous-cause-support-goodyear-encourages-you-to-donate-buy-their-tires\/","title":{"rendered":"Conspicuous Cause Support: Buy Tires, Support our Troops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Breast cancer awareness campaigns have perfected the performance of social cause support.\u00a0 Wearing a pink ribbon, a pin with a pink ribbon, or something with a pink ribbon on it is now coterminous with concern and support for people diagnosed with breast cancer.\u00a0 Many companies now have <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/19\/should-marketing-principles-be-applied-to-disease\/\" target=\"_self\">breast cancer awareness-themed products<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, yellow ribbons with the phrase &#8220;support our troops,&#8221; most notably\u00a0magnetized to car bumpers,\u00a0is another form of &#8220;conspicuous cause endorsement.&#8221;\u00a0 Stephen W. discovered another example of this form of &#8220;activism,&#8221; this time in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodyearsupportourtroops.com\/#\/?p=home\" target=\"_blank\">Goodyear tires<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/IMG_20101013_140340.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28205  aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/10\/IMG_20101013_140340-764x1024.jpg\" width=\"290\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From what I can discern, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodyearsupportourtroops.com\/#\/?p=home\" target=\"_blank\">the program<\/a>consists of putting &#8220;Support Our Troops&#8221; tires on Nascar cars sponsored by Goodyear, donating $20,000 towards troop-supporting causes, and then asking\u00a0 you to buy their tires and donate your own money.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
