{"id":2806,"date":"2008-09-22T22:36:46","date_gmt":"2008-09-23T03:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=2806"},"modified":"2010-11-24T01:52:23","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T06:52:23","slug":"hispanic-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/22\/hispanic-food\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Hispanic&#8221; Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen W. sent us this picture of the &#8220;Hispanic&#8221; foods aisle at a Walmart in Sioux Falls, South Dakota:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/09\/hispanic_food.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2807  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/09\/hispanic_food.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"625\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why is this odd?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;Hispanic&#8221; was actually invented by the U.S. government to mean Spanish-speaking.\u00a0 The government invented it for the\u00a0census because they wanted to be able to label and identify all Spanish speakers.\u00a0 &#8220;Hispanic,&#8221; then, unlike the terms &#8220;Latino&#8221; or &#8220;Chicano,&#8221; is not an identity that originated among those to whom it applies.\u00a0 Further, though it is sometimes used as a euphemism for &#8220;Mexican&#8221; or &#8220;Latino,&#8221;\u00a0Spanish is only spoken in Latin America because of the conquest of parts of Latin America by Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Given the history and use of this term,\u00a0what would &#8220;Hispanic&#8221; food be?!\u00a0 (According to Walmart, it&#8217;s salsa and tacos.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">NEW:<\/span><\/strong> Another use of the term &#8220;Hispanic.&#8221;\u00a0 This time\u00a0on a bag of peanuts passed out on a\u00a0Southwest Airlines flight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg0390.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3220  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg0390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/cgi-bin\/stories.pl?ACCT=PRNI2&amp;STORY=\/www\/story\/09-15-2008\/0004885180&amp;EDATE=\" target=\"_blank\">a press release<\/a> by Southwest Airlines about their celebration of Southwest Airlines:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Southwest Airlines shares its passion for Hispanic Heritage Month with our internal and external Customers by hosting celebrations <em>in our Hispanic focus markets<\/em>. Local Employees kick off the festivities by partnering with local organizations, and at airports, with gate games, Mariachi music, authentic foods, and distributing commemorative T-shirts and lapel pins emblazoned with our Hispanic Heritage Month message &#8220;Celebremos Tu Herencia,&#8221; &#8220;We Celebrate Your Heritage.&#8221; Hispanic Heritage month posters also are on display during this month-long celebration. Finally, be on the lookout for Southwest&#8217;s Hispanic Heritage Month specialty packaged peanuts!
