{"id":27584,"date":"2010-09-18T10:54:52","date_gmt":"2010-09-18T15:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=27584"},"modified":"2013-12-05T03:50:33","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T08:50:33","slug":"the-extent-of-the-white-advantage-over-blacks-and-latinos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/09\/18\/the-extent-of-the-white-advantage-over-blacks-and-latinos\/","title":{"rendered":"The Extent of the White Class Advantage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I posted the news that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/09\/17\/u-s-poverty-rate-highest-in-15-years\/\" target=\"_self\">the percent of Americans in poverty reached nearly 15% in 2009<\/a>.\u00a0 Philip Cohen, at <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/16\/family-income-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>, used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/archives\/income_wealth\/cb10-144.html\" target=\"_blank\">the same Census data<\/a> to give us an idea of how both wealth and poverty are distributed across U.S. racial groups.\u00a0 We know that Blacks, Latinos, American Indians and some, but not all, Asian sub-groups are poorer, on average, than Whites.\u00a0 Cohen offers us a different way of looking at this, however, by plotting the income-to-needs ratio for Whites, Blacks, and Latinos over the last 8 years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That income-need ratio is, by definition, 1.0 at the poverty line, and numbers above that are multiples of needs, so 3.0 is income of 3-times the poverty line.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That ratio sits along the vertical axis, with time at the horizontal:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/09\/income-needs-race-eth-2009.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27585\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/09\/income-needs-race-eth-2009.jpg\" width=\"372\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This, Cohen explains, &#8220;&#8230;allows us to see the size of the White advantage&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 He continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So, for example, the richest 5th of Whites are above 11-times the poverty line, while the poorest 5th of Whites are (on average) just above the poverty line. In contrast, the richest 5th of Blacks and Latinos are around 7-times the poverty line, and 40% of both groups are below 1.5-times the poverty line.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not simply, then, that Blacks and Latinos are disproportionately poor.\u00a0 Their poor are also poorer than the poor Whites and their rich are less rich than rich Whites.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
