{"id":27358,"date":"2017-03-24T10:39:13","date_gmt":"2017-03-24T15:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=27358"},"modified":"2017-03-24T11:47:53","modified_gmt":"2017-03-24T16:47:53","slug":"race-gender-and-book-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2017\/03\/24\/race-gender-and-book-reviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Race, Gender, and Book Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Flashback Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a post at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fair.org\/index.php?page=4119\" target=\"_blank\">Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting<\/a>, Steve Rendall and Zachary Tomanelli investigated the racial breakdown of the book reviewers and authors in two important book review venues, the <em>New York Times<\/em> Book Review and C-SPAN&#8217;s After Words.\u00a0 They found that the vast majority of both reviewers and authors were white males.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 95% of the authors and 96% of the reviewers were non-Latino white (compare that with the fact that whites are just over 60% of the U.S. population as of 2016).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/09\/110.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27362\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/09\/110.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Women accounted for between 13 and 31% of the authors and reviewers:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/09\/29.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27361\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/09\/29.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is some hard data showing that white men&#8217;s ideas are made more accessible than the ideas of others, likely translating into greater influence on social discourse and public policy.\u00a0 These individuals certainly don&#8217;t all say the same thing, nor do they necessarily articulate ideas that benefit white men, but a greater diversity of perspectives would certainly enrich our discourse.<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/scatter.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/27\/whose-voice-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scatterplot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Originally posted in September, 2010.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
