{"id":26958,"date":"2010-09-03T10:52:10","date_gmt":"2010-09-03T15:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=26958"},"modified":"2013-12-05T03:58:21","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T08:58:21","slug":"separating-the-angels-from-the-demons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/09\/03\/separating-the-angels-from-the-demons\/","title":{"rendered":"Separating the Angels from the Demons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel O., writing from New Zealand, sent in an interesting example of gendered energy drinks.\u00a0 Other than their being gendered, I thought there were two things worth noting.<\/p>\n<p>First, the only difference between the male and female version of the drink (other than the marketing, which is downright diametrical) is the number of calories.\u00a0 The female version, Angel, is low calorie; the male version, Demon, is not.\u00a0 So dieting, an imperative towards thinness, and femininity (not to mention innocence) are all lumped together in the marketing of the product.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.demonenergy.co.nz\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Demon<\/a> (don&#8217;t click&#8230; loud, scary music):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/125.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26961\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/125.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/125.jpg 987w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/125-500x320.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.angelenergy.co.nz\/products\" target=\"_blank\">Angel<\/a> (safe to click):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/214.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26960\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/214.jpg\" width=\"561\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/214.jpg 991w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/214-500x299.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second thing I thought was interesting about these two drinks was that it took a lot of digging to find evidence that they were made by the same company (though I finally found it <a href=\"http:\/\/centralarchive.co.nz\/?webid=fmc&amp;articleid=31700\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 As far as I can tell, neither website admits the existence of the other.\u00a0 This is a really strong separation of the two products, as if femininity and masculinity threaten to spoil each other, it&#8217;s best to keep them as far away from one another as possible.\u00a0 God forbid we know that the makers of the aggressive Demon drink sissy it up to also make the sweet, low cal Angel drink.\u00a0 Best to keep our masculinity and femininity pure.<\/p>\n<p>This reminds me of the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/24\/onslaught-dove-vs-axe\/\" target=\"_self\">Dove and Axe are owned by the same company<\/a>.\u00a0 The two products are sold with divergent marketing campaigns &#8212; the former claims to empower women, the latter produces some of the most sexist advertising on TV &#8212; but they are both part of Unilever.\u00a0 Only our ignorance of this fact makes Dove&#8217;s marketing strategy seem earnest.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
