{"id":26525,"date":"2010-08-08T10:06:53","date_gmt":"2010-08-08T15:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=26525"},"modified":"2013-12-05T04:12:49","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:12:49","slug":"diet-food-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/08\/diet-food-for-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Diet Food for Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was a young adult there was a pervasive concern with unrealistic expectations of thinness for women and how this contributed to low self-esteem and eating disorders among young girls.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think this discourse is gone, but it&#8217;s definitely been joined by a competing discourse, the one that says that kids are too fat and need to diet.\u00a0 In the latter category come these limited calorie snack packs from Disney (with <em>Cars <\/em>and generic princess themes):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/photo.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26527\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/photo.jpg\" width=\"508\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/photo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/08\/photo-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the anti-eating disorder discourse reigned supreme, I think this product would have been protested off the shelves.\u00a0 They fit quite nicely, however, with the anti-obesity discourse.\u00a0 From that perspective it makes perfect sense to teach kids to count calories.<\/p>\n<p>The rise and fall of discourses is a fascinating topic.\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0 Do the two discourses co-exist today?\u00a0 Is anti-obesity winning?\u00a0 What&#8217;s the future of the anti-eating disorder discourse?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
