{"id":25960,"date":"2010-07-30T10:21:59","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T15:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=25960"},"modified":"2017-09-16T23:51:17","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T04:51:17","slug":"guest-post-sissy-bounce-sexually-liberating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/07\/30\/guest-post-sissy-bounce-sexually-liberating\/","title":{"rendered":"Is &#8220;Sissy Bounce&#8221; Sexually Liberating?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wish I could spend all of my time in New Orleans, my favorite city in the world, so my friends are kind enough to send anything they run across that involves the Crescent City.\u00a0Two friends forwarded a recent <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/25\/magazine\/25bounce-t.html\">New York Times<\/a><\/em> article on the rise of &#8220;sissy bounce,&#8221; a new take on\u00a0bounce &#8212; an energetic form of rap\/hip hop that originated in New Orleans.\u00a0&#8220;Sissy bounce&#8221; refers to a handful of transgendered\/gay rappers, some of whom perform in drag. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/kateyred\">Katey Red<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/bigfreedia\">Big Freedia<\/a>\u00a0are two of the biggest names in &#8220;sissy bounce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Like New Orleans itself, the effects of &#8220;sissy bounce&#8221;\u00a0are visceral &#8212; raw and invigorating, and its club success surely represents an important\u00a0interruption in a genre known for its homophobia.\u00a0Looking beyond its\u00a0woman-hating name, the mere presence of\u00a0individuals in &#8220;sissy bounce&#8221; who challenge norms of masculinity and sexuality in bounce is a move toward gay equity.<\/p>\n<p>But I take exception to Times reporter, Jonathan Dee&#8217;s claim that &#8220;sissy bounce&#8230; creates an atmosphere of sexual liberation &#8212; for women.&#8221;\u00a0 He describes the\u00a0typical &#8220;sissy bounce&#8221; scene: women gathered around the performer, grabbing their ankles and\u00a0hoisting their gyrating arses in the air.\u00a0 Dee deems this sexually liberating because, he argues, the female attendees are dancing &#8220;for Freedia.&#8221; That may well be the case, but videos and pictures from the Times article also show a constant group of men\u00a0gathered on\u00a0the perimeter, leering &#8212; snapping photos, filming, and shining flashlights on the dancer&#8217;s body parts.<\/p>\n<p>Transgender\/gay rappers spitting arguably misogynistic lyrics over a sea of\u00a0throbbing female posteriors while a crowd of men looks on is not sexual liberation.\u00a0It&#8217;s the same old tired show where women&#8217;s sexuality revolves around pleasuring the male gaze.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Caroline Heldman is a professor of politics at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxy.edu\/faculty\/caroline-heldman\">Occidental College<\/a>.
