Connolly is an athlete, adventurer, author, and photographer who was born without legs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/double-take_custom1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25946\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/double-take_custom1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his memoir, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/books\/Double-Take-Kevin-Michael-Connolly\/?isbn=9780061791536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Double Take<\/em><\/a>, he talks about travel. People around the world, he explains, tend to stare.\u00a0 And, with his camera, he stared back.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity, it appears, is very human. But people in different places tend to speculate differently as to the source of his lost legs and that, he discovered, is quite culturally specific.<\/p>\n<p>In Sarajevo, people tended to think that he&#8217;d lost his legs in mines during the Balkan conflicts.\u00a0 In New Zealand he overheard a child asking his mother if he&#8217;d been attacked by a shark.\u00a0 In Montana, he was asked if he still wore his dog tags from Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>I broke my leg five weeks ago and, for what it&#8217;s worth (not much really), my experience, also, is that people speculate based on their own experiences and their relationship to you.\u00a0 An avid lindy hopper (12 years now&#8230; well, not <em>now <\/em>exactly, but again real soon), many of my dance friends immediately inquire as to whether I broke my leg dancing.\u00a0 My raunchy friend, Fancy, asked if I broke it &#8220;doin&#8217; it.&#8221;\u00a0 The second most common guess is that I broke it stepping off a curb.\u00a0 It turns out lots of people do that.\u00a0 Who knew!<\/p>\n<p>For more, see <a href=\"http:\/\/kevinmichaelconnolly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connolly&#8217;s website<\/a> or listen to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=128107424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR Radio Story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
