{"id":25846,"date":"2010-08-14T10:01:35","date_gmt":"2010-08-14T15:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=25846"},"modified":"2013-12-05T04:08:51","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:08:51","slug":"the-recession-re-employment-and-job-satisfaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/14\/the-recession-re-employment-and-job-satisfaction\/","title":{"rendered":"The Recession, Re-Employment, and Job Satisfaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. unemployment numbers only begin to describe how U.S. workers have suffered in this recession.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/pewsocialtrends.org\/assets\/pdf\/759-recession.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center<\/a> has some additional data on this experience.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-six percent of full-time workers who became re-employed currently only work part-time.\u00a0 Thirteen percent moved from part-time to full time work.\u00a0 So, among the employed, there are 13 percent fewer full-time workers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/115.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25852\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/115.jpg\" width=\"313\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Americans who lost their jobs and became re-employed during this recession say that they&#8217;re making about the same, that the benefits are about equal, and many like their new job better:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/212.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25853\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/212.jpg\" width=\"330\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/212.jpg 345w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/212-313x500.jpg 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, the re-employed are more likely than the still-employed to say that they are overqualified for their current job:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/313.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25854\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/313.jpg\" width=\"393\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>People that moved from full- to part-time work are significantly less likely to be satisfied with their new position:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/45.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25855\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/45.jpg\" width=\"462\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/45.jpg 504w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/45-500x331.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Forty-seven percent of part-time workers would like a full-time job:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/63.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25856\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/63.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;underemployed&#8221; refers to this 47 percent of the population.\u00a0\u00a0 Men, young people, the less educated, lower income, and non-whites are more likely to be underemployed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/73.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25857\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/73.jpg\" width=\"288\" height=\"647\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
