{"id":25824,"date":"2010-07-24T10:20:04","date_gmt":"2010-07-24T15:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=25824"},"modified":"2013-12-05T05:02:51","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T10:02:51","slug":"constrasting-opinions-as-to-the-economic-future-of-young-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/07\/24\/constrasting-opinions-as-to-the-economic-future-of-young-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"Constrasting Opinions as to the Economic Future of Young Adults"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pew Research Center has <a href=\"http:\/\/pewsocialtrends.org\/assets\/pdf\/759-recession.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">released data<\/a> suggesting an age gap in optimism for the future of American young adults.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if their children will be better off or worse off than they are, less than half of U.S. parents say &#8220;better off&#8221; and a full 25 percent say &#8220;worse off.&#8221;\u00a0 This is the most pessimistic we&#8217;ve seen parents in 16 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/113.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25825\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/113.jpg\" width=\"365\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But their kids are more optimistic than anyone else, with 85% saying that they expect that their financial situation will improve next year:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/210.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25826\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/210.jpg\" width=\"306\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course these data aren&#8217;t entirely compatible, but it&#8217;s an interesting comparison nonetheless.\u00a0 The idealism of youth?\u00a0 The pessimism that comes with bad backs and mortgage payments?\u00a0 The possibility that 18-29-year-olds have nowhere to go but up?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/economix.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/30\/young-and-hopeful\/?ref=business\" target=\"_blank\">Economix<\/a>, via <a href=\"http:\/\/karlbakeman.com\/2010\/07\/01\/follow-up-to-newman\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karl Bakeman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
