{"id":25682,"date":"2010-08-11T10:06:42","date_gmt":"2010-08-11T15:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=25682"},"modified":"2013-12-05T04:10:00","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:10:00","slug":"how-racism-against-blacks-hurts-whites-the-kidney-failure-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/11\/how-racism-against-blacks-hurts-whites-the-kidney-failure-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Racialized Space: Whites, Blacks, and Kidney Failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>White people should worry about racism.\u00a0 They should worry about racism because it&#8217;s wrong.\u00a0 But if that&#8217;s not enough of a motivation, they should worry about it for their own damn good.\u00a0 Philip Cohen of <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/21\/healthcares-race-of-place\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a> shows us how so with a discussion of <a href=\"http:\/\/jasn.asnjournals.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/ASN.2009101008v1\" target=\"_blank\">a recent paper<\/a> published in the <em>Journal of the American Society of Nephrology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Figure below illustrates the percentage of black (grey bar) and white (white bar) residents who went into end-stage renal disease (kidney failure; ESRD) before ever seeing a doctor specializing in kidneys (a nephrologist).\u00a0 As we move from left to right, the zip codes in which patients live becomes increasingly populated by black people.<\/p>\n<p>What we see is that, in any given neighborhood, black people are always less likely to get access to a kidney specialist before their kidneys fail; but also that white people living in a neighborhood with a higher percentage of blacks are less likely than whites in a more white neighborhood to see a specialist.\u00a0 So much so that whites living in neighborhoods that are more than 50% black are less likely to see a specialist than blacks living in neighborhoods that are less than 25% black.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/Picture11.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25684\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/Picture11.png\" width=\"537\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/Picture11.png 763w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/Picture11-500x290.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cohen specifies that&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the relationship still holds even when individual socioeconomic status, and local-area socioeconomic status, are controlled. So it\u2019s not just a poverty effect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Somehow places that are &#8220;blacker&#8221;, even when they are not poor, are serviced with inferior health care compared to places that are &#8220;whiter.&#8221;\u00a0 And everyone suffers for it (though not necessarily equally).<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
