{"id":25015,"date":"2010-07-05T10:29:36","date_gmt":"2010-07-05T15:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=25015"},"modified":"2013-12-05T05:12:21","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T10:12:21","slug":"fashion-meets-the-gulf-oil-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/07\/05\/fashion-meets-the-gulf-oil-spill\/","title":{"rendered":"Fashion Meets the Gulf Oil Spill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fluid hair salon released this ad to let people know that it is donating all clipped hair to the oil recovery efforts in the Gulf:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/hair_ad.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25023\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/07\/hair_ad.jpg\" width=\"574\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ad is a perfect example of the way in which entirely-unrelated messages get inexplicably translated into half-naked women looking uncomfortable.\u00a0 Why not advertise donations to oil recovery with clean beaches, or dirty beaches, or oil booms, or rinsed off birds, or smiling shrimpers, or actual hair-based oil spill mats?\u00a0 Why in heaven&#8217;s name slather a perfectly clean woman in goop that looks like oil and make her crawl in a marsh?<\/p>\n<p>Because <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/23\/manipulated-women-and-high-fashion\/\" target=\"_self\">half-naked women who are dirty, disgusting, and uncomfortable are high-fashion<\/a>.\u00a0 Because we love to see women on their knees in the mud.\u00a0 To a great extent, elite fashion imagery involves putting women in gross situations and pretending that it&#8217;s cool.\u00a0 These images assault their bodies and their dignity.\u00a0 So how else would an <em>elite <\/em>salon advertise its good-doing?\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/27\/the-fear-and-suffering-of-women-as-a-sexual-turn-on\/\" target=\"_self\">Female punishment is the language of fashion<\/a>. <\/em>Fluid just speaks it fluently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
