{"id":24985,"date":"2010-08-01T13:07:46","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T18:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=24985"},"modified":"2013-12-05T04:15:03","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:15:03","slug":"sociological-images-update-july-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/01\/sociological-images-update-july-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Sociological Images Update (July 2010)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEWS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This month Gwen and I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who have submitted ideas for posts.\u00a0 Our inbox is alive with ideas and it makes our job exceedingly fun!\u00a0 We absolutely could not do it without all of your eyes.\u00a0 So thank you for your submissions!\u00a0 Also, if you&#8217;ve submitted an idea and it was never posted, please don&#8217;t be discouraged.\u00a0 We get far more ideas than we could possibly use.\u00a0 And, even if yours was a submission that we decided against using, be assured that we read it, thought about it, and sometimes talked about it together before setting it aside.\u00a0 We appreciate all of your help, even if it doesn&#8217;t make the front page.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, we&#8217;ve entered a new partial syndication agreement with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">BlogHer<\/a> and we&#8217;re super excited to add that partnership to our one with <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.\u00a0 Our first syndicated post was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogher.com\/multinational-corporations-and-cultivation-colorism\" target=\"_blank\">our recent discussion of the Vaseline skin-lightening Facebook application<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, please do remember that you can follow us on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/socimages\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> or friend us on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/inbox\/?ref=mb#\/pages\/Sociological-Images-Seeing-Is-Believing\/8399768839?ref=ts\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>.\u00a0 Soon we&#8217;ll be launching a MySpace page as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEW PUBLICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(If you don&#8217;t have the subscriptions required to access either paper, we&#8217;re happy to send you a copy,\u00a0 Just send us a note at socimages@thesocietypages.org.)<\/p>\n<p>Gwen and my most recent essay in the print-magazine <em>Contexts<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/caliber.ucpress.net\/doi\/abs\/10.1525\/ctx.2010.9.2.84\" target=\"_blank\">Flesh-Toned<\/a>, is now online.\u00a0 It draws on the long conversation we&#8217;ve been having here about the way that the use of the terms &#8220;flesh,&#8221; &#8220;nude,&#8221; and &#8220;skin&#8221; to refer to light beige colors makes darker-skinned people invisible.<\/p>\n<p>Also, a paper I wrote with Caroline Heldman is now available at <em>Sexuality Research and Social Policy<\/em>.\u00a0 How and why hook-up culture came to characterize U.S. colleges remains a mystery.\u00a0 In our paper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/dl1q65rth2p02tm8\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hook-Up Culture: Setting a New Research Agenda<\/a>, we argue that the emergence of hook-up culture on college campuses is an excellent opportunity to learn more about how sexual cultures change.\u00a0 We review the literature, offer some hypotheses to explore, and discuss methodological requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEWLY ENRICHED POSTS (Look for what&#8217;s <\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NEW! July &#8217;10<\/span>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This month we added new material to some older gender- and race-related posts.\u00a0 Thanks almost exclusively to Gwen for doing the hard work of updating!\u00a0 And thanks to those of who sent the images along!<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Race<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When a racially diverse group of people is included in ads or other materials, darker-skinned people are typically behind or below the lighter-skinned.\u00a0 We updated our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/26\/how-and-why-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-8th-in-a-series\/\" target=\"_self\">how people of color are subordinated in advertising with a new example of a church welcome banner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another &#8217;70s book on useful Spanish phrases for <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/04\/kitchen-spanish-from-the-hancock-park-historical-society\/\">talking to your maid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Givenchy has some rather <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/10\/nude-is-the-new-black\/\">light &#8220;nude&#8221;-colored dresses<\/a>, but <em>Esquire<\/em> responded to complaints about ignoring Black men by following up a story with a segment that acknowledged that African Americans might require or prefer different hair maintenance techniques and styles than other groups.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/11\/the-walmart-barbie-scandal\/\">Black dolls sell for less than White dolls<\/a> at Target.<\/p>\n<p>A second example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/08\/24\/vintage-ads-depict-african-americans-as-dirty-simpletons\/\" target=\"_self\">vintage soap advertising suggesting that African Americans are dirty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gender\/Sex<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Haven&#8217;t found quite the right string bikini for your infant girl? We added another example to our post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/20\/sexualizing-infants\/\">bikinis for babies<\/a> to help you out.<\/p>\n<p>Two more examples in which <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/14\/women-can-wear-mens-shirts-but-men-cannot-wear-womens\/\">men are people and women are women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/08\/large-clothes-on-small-women-a-plus-size-marketing-mystery\/\" target=\"_blank\">large clothes on small models<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/16\/south-korean-parking-spots-for-women-only\/\">parking spaces just for women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/21\/do-you-love-animals-do-you-have-lady-bits-take-off-your-clothes\/\">PETA demonstration model<\/a> in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/07\/16\/power-masculine-weakness-feminine\/\">gendering of language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rosie the Riveter was <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/10\/22\/trivializing-womens-power\/\">&#8220;maid to clean.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More gendering of boys&#8217; and girls&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/04\/what-do-boys-and-girls-draw\/\">(coloring) books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>eBay continues to gender gift suggestions&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/06\/gendered-gift-suggestions-from-ebay\/\">while simultaneously degendering them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/26\/another-collection-of-gender-and-tech-related-images\/\">Only dudes use technology<\/a>. Didn&#8217;t you know?<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t smoke. <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/15\/be-smokefree-and-get-hot-chicks\/\">It makes you ugly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
