{"id":24710,"date":"2010-06-23T10:17:58","date_gmt":"2010-06-23T15:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=24710"},"modified":"2013-12-05T05:17:43","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T10:17:43","slug":"collateral-damage-in-the-evolution-of-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/23\/collateral-damage-in-the-evolution-of-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Collateral Damage in the Evolution of Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica B. sent in an excellent example of the way that symbols evolve.\u00a0 Language is just a set of symbols.\u00a0 The squiggles and lines that make up &#8220;cat&#8221; don&#8217;t look anything like a cat, but English speakers will know what it refers to.<\/p>\n<p>And language, of course, evolves and sometimes that evolution has odd and unintended consequences.\u00a0 Consider all those companies, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omg.org\/gettingstarted\/gettingstartedindex.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Object Management Group<\/a>, whose acronym, out of nowhere, had a new, blasphemous meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica&#8217;s example involves the new word, &#8220;lol,&#8221; which just happens to also be a symbol for drowning:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/65813_drowncallcopslaugh.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24712\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/65813_drowncallcopslaugh.jpg\" width=\"413\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/65813_drowncallcopslaugh.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/65813_drowncallcopslaugh-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/65813_drowncallcopslaugh-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/cdn-www.i-am-bored.com\/media\/65813_drowncallcopslaugh.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>She writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is a great example of the social construction of language and thus, the social construction of our reality. We, as a society, have agreed that &#8220;lol&#8221; has a meaning separate from itself and the overall accepted meaning of this symbol is laughter, as opposed to the original intended meaning of a person drowning. While this is a simplistic and comical example, it clarifies the results of differences between intended meaning and interpreted meaning, as well as indicating the importance of social construction of language and society as a whole.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
