{"id":24495,"date":"2010-06-25T10:38:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-25T15:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=24495"},"modified":"2013-12-05T05:17:11","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T10:17:11","slug":"dads-as-an-afterthought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/25\/dads-as-an-afterthought\/","title":{"rendered":"Dads as an Afterthought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rose saw the ad below in a free UK parenting magazine.\u00a0 She thought it was a great example of how an ad sometimes pays &#8220;lip service to being inclusive and PC, while [including] numerous elements [that] make it obvious that it isn&#8217;t what they really intend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/mummy_mornings.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-24496\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/mummy_mornings-1024x766.jpg\" width=\"553\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/mummy_mornings-1024x766.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/mummy_mornings-500x374.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/mummy_mornings.jpg 1085w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, yes, the ad specifies that the event is for &#8220;mums, dads and carers&#8221; and it&#8217;s nice that they went that far to include them.\u00a0 But the event is clearly for mothers or women carers and their girl children (and, more specifically, the transfer of feminine training from mother to daughter).\u00a0 The color of the ad, the feminine shoes with bows, the title (&#8220;Mummy Mornings&#8221;), and the feminized activities (including &#8220;beauty sessions&#8221; and the chance to be &#8220;spoilt&#8221;) are all elements that mark this as for-girls-only.<\/p>\n<p>Is it better to include dads as an afterthought?\u00a0 Or should we just acknowledge that we&#8217;re organizing parent\/child activities around mothers (and in this case, daughters)?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
