{"id":24325,"date":"2010-08-02T10:40:08","date_gmt":"2010-08-02T15:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=24325"},"modified":"2013-12-05T04:14:37","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:14:37","slug":"who-is-driving-increasing-acceptance-of-gays-and-lesbians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/02\/who-is-driving-increasing-acceptance-of-gays-and-lesbians\/","title":{"rendered":"Who is Driving Increasing Acceptance of Gays and Lesbians?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Kimmel forwarded me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/135764\/Americans-Acceptance-Gay-Relations-Crosses-Threshold.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">a blog post at Gallup<\/a> updating their data on acceptance of homosexuality in the U.S.\u00a0 In 2009, &#8220;morally acceptable&#8221; eeked out a win over &#8220;morally wrong&#8221; and, in 2010, it took a resounding lead:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/2cqlvqnybuikm7dz4jllsg.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24331\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/2cqlvqnybuikm7dz4jllsg.gif\" width=\"464\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who is driving this increase in acceptance of homosexuality?\u00a0 Other than <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/05\/support-for-same-sex-marriage-by-age-and-state\/\" target=\"_self\">young people<\/a>, that is, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/04\/22\/survey-finds-different-levels-of-acceptance-for-gays-versus-homosexuals\/\" target=\"_self\">the move to the words &#8220;gay&#8221; and &#8220;lesbian.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gallup offers some really interesting answers to that question.<\/p>\n<p>First, men are driving it.\u00a0 Women are only marginally more supportive of homosexuality today compared to 2006.\u00a0 But men, especially young men, but older men too, are significantly more supportive.\u00a0 A full 14% of men have changed their mind in the last four years!\u00a0 Women started out more supportive than men, but men have caught up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/cmgekfr6y0ef3h4efaljog.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24332\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/cmgekfr6y0ef3h4efaljog.gif\" width=\"438\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a>Second, while members of all political parties and religions reported show increases in their level of acceptance of gays and lesbians, it is the politically moderate that are really pushing the percentages up.\u00a0 Eleven percent of independents and 14% of moderates changed their mind about homosexuality between 2006 and 2010.\u00a0 They are now as likely as democrats to endorse homosexuality (but still fall behind self-described liberals).\u00a0 One in 20 Republicans and conservatives also changed their mind, though in overall acceptance rate they still fall far behind everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, among religiously-affiliated Americans, Catholics were the most likely to change their mind to favor homosexuality.\u00a0 They are as likely as political Democrats to support gays and lesbians.\u00a0 Religious non-Christians and the non-religious, however, kick everybody&#8217;s asses with 84% and 85% of them saying that gay and lesbian relations are &#8220;morally acceptable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/zkyp_lbmrkktxjujbn9zoq.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24333\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/06\/zkyp_lbmrkktxjujbn9zoq.gif\" width=\"441\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
