{"id":23992,"date":"2010-06-16T10:44:18","date_gmt":"2010-06-16T15:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=23992"},"modified":"2013-12-06T03:02:13","modified_gmt":"2013-12-06T08:02:13","slug":"gas-prices-and-number-of-miles-driven-1956-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/16\/gas-prices-and-number-of-miles-driven-1956-2009\/","title":{"rendered":"Gas Prices and Number of Miles Driven, 1956-2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To me this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/imagepages\/2010\/05\/02\/business\/02metrics.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> graphic showing the relationship between gas prices and the average number of miles driven powerfully suggests that gas prices actually have little to do with how much driving Americans do.\u00a0 The vertical axis is gas prices and the horizontal axis is the number of miles driven.\u00a0 The line inside the figure is time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/02metrics-popup-v31.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-23999\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/02metrics-popup-v31-1023x701.jpg\" width=\"563\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/02metrics-popup-v31-1023x701.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/02metrics-popup-v31-500x342.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/02metrics-popup-v31.jpg 1151w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Basically the illustration shows that the number of miles per year Americans drive has been climbing since 1956.\u00a0 Despite short-term gas price fluctuations, something is driving us to drive more and more every year.<\/p>\n<p>When gas prices do shoot up &#8212; such as during the oil embargo, the energy crisis, and the most recent peak &#8212; Americans show a\u00a0 modest drop in driving, but it&#8217;s not a very large one and we recover rather quickly.\u00a0 During the oil embargo, Americans shaved 210 miles a year off of their driving.\u00a0 During the energy crisis, only 156.\u00a0 The recent reduction in the number of miles driven per year is attributed by the <em>New York Times<\/em> writer to the fact that so many people are unemployed and, therefore, no longer need to drive to work.<\/p>\n<p>Driving, then, shows only a modest response to high prices.\u00a0 Perhaps the jumps in prices during these peaks &#8212; 43 and 106 cents per gallon respectively &#8212;\u00a0 weren&#8217;t really worth slowing down for?\u00a0 Or perhaps driving is so culturally meaningful that Americans are willing to pay to stay in their cars regardless?\u00a0 Or maybe driving, and driving farther, has become increasingly important over time such that people <em>can&#8217;t<\/em> reasonably reduce the amount of driving they do?<\/p>\n<p>It seems to me that the problem is at least partly infrastructural.\u00a0 I wonder how average miles driven responds, or would respond, to enhancing and investing in public transportation?\u00a0 If we started building denser neighborhoods and got rid of suburbs?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flowingdata.com\/2010\/05\/11\/driving-habits-and-gas-prices-shift-into-reverse\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flowing Data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
