For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/10\/your-body-men-are-people-and-women-are-women\/\" target=\"_self\">the Body Worlds exhibit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/14\/women-can-wear-mens-shirts-but-men-cannot-wear-womens\/\">&#8220;regular&#8221; t-shirts are men&#8217;s<\/a>, Best Buy assumes <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/11\/best-buy-assumes-all-customers-are-male\/\">customers are male<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/18\/stick-figures-and-stick-figures-who-parent\/\">stick figures on signs are generally male<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/04\/default-avatars-a-collection\/\">default avatars tend to be male<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve collected several more examples of the tendency to present men as the norm, while women are a marked, non-default category. @LydNicholas tweeted us this example of a LEGO product advertised on their <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.lego.com\/en-US\/LEGO-Time-Teacher-Girl-Minifigure-Watch-Clock-5001371\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>. \u00a0Notice that the blue version is a LEGO Time-Teach Minifigure Watch and Clock, while the pink version specifies that it&#8217;s for girls:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_8.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53685\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_8-500x204.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_8-500x204.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_8.png 807w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_9.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53686\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_9-500x201.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_9-500x201.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Screenshot_9.png 801w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jessica J. noticed that\u00a0Wal-Mart\u00a0Target helpfully lets you know where to find both neutral, plain old deodorant and women&#8217;s deodorant:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/24\/male-as-the-neutral-default\/1-84\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23757\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/114-500x375.jpg\" width=\"470\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jane G. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jagosaurus\/4630029922\/\" target=\"_blank\">sent us this photo<\/a> of t-ball sets, one for girls and the other with no sex specified:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/24\/male-as-the-neutral-default\/1-83\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23754\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23754 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/113-499x500.jpg\" width=\"484\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/113-499x500.jpg 499w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/113-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/113.jpg 1023w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aline, in Brazil, found these two wall painting kits. \u00a0One is just a painting kit and the other is specifically &#8220;for women&#8221; (&#8220;para mulheres&#8221;). \u00a0The latter, she said, claims to be a special offer, but is actually about $2 U.S. dollars more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/15.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54041\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/15.jpg\" width=\"387\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/15.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/15-500x402.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/15-1024x825.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/15-110x90.jpg 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericstoller.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/29\/womens-college-basketball-espn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Stoller<\/a> pointed out that ESPN differentiates between college basketball and &#8220;women&#8217;s&#8221; basketball:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/24\/male-as-the-neutral-default\/espn-womens-basketball\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23756\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23756 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/espn-womens-basketball.png\" width=\"451\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lindsay H. pointed out that when you go to the U.S. Post Office&#8217;s website to forward your mail, it offers you the chance to subscribe to magazines. Those aimed at women (<em>Cosmopolitan, First for Women<\/em>, etc.) are in the category &#8220;Women,&#8221; while equivalent magazines for men (<em>Esquire, Maxim<\/em>) are not in a category titled &#8220;Men&#8221; but, rather, &#8220;Lifestyle&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/24\/male-as-the-neutral-default\/picture-1-36\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23850\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23850 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/Picture-11.png\" width=\"408\" height=\"419\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And Jane V.S. noticed that REI has various types of marked, &#8220;non-standard&#8221; and &#8220;Awesome Kid&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/126.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25083\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/126.jpg\" width=\"368\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">E.W. searched Google for men&#8217;s specific road bikes and Google asked, &#8220;Don&#8217;t you mean women&#8217;s specific road bikes&#8221;?\u00a0 Because there are road bikes for <em>people <\/em>and road bikes for <em>women<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/mensspecificbikes.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25216\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/mensspecificbikes.png\" width=\"456\" height=\"115\" \/><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ann C. sent a screenshot of bubblebox, a site for children&#8217;s games.\u00a0 Notice that along the top there are seven options.\u00a0 The last is &#8220;girls,&#8221;
