{"id":23566,"date":"2010-06-28T10:36:09","date_gmt":"2010-06-28T15:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=23566"},"modified":"2013-12-05T05:15:25","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T10:15:25","slug":"to-whom-do-children-just-happen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/28\/to-whom-do-children-just-happen\/","title":{"rendered":"To Whom Do Children &#8220;Just Happen&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Pew Research Center, in a <a href=\"http:\/\/pewsocialtrends.org\/assets\/pdf\/754-new-demography-of-motherhood.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report on American motherhood<\/a> released this month, reported that 35% of people say that their first child &#8220;just happened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I think this is fascinating in light of the fact that many Americans are generally committed to the idea that we control our fertility.\u00a0 Safe(r) sex and family planning campaigns tell us that, if we make the proper choices, then we will (very probably) not have an unplanned pregnancy.\u00a0 They tend to downplay the fact that even the most effective methods of pregnancy prevention are not foolproof.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s call this the<em> ideology of near-perfect control of reproduction.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In fact, about half of all births occur as a result of an unplanned pregnancy.\u00a0 So the fact that 1\/3rd of parents say their first child &#8220;just happened&#8221; may actually be an under count.\u00a0 An ideology of near-perfect control of reproduction, however, makes it seem really surprising that so many parents would choose that response.<\/p>\n<p>Then again&#8230; maybe the ideology of near-perfect control of reproduction is a luxury afforded mostly to privileged classes.\u00a0 The Pew report also offered data on who said that their first child &#8220;just happened&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/06\/28\/to-whom-do-children-just-happen\/justhappened\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23574\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23574\" title=\"justhappened\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/justhappened.jpg\" width=\"377\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/justhappened.jpg 377w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/justhappened-354x500.jpg 354w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice that people with less education and lower incomes were more likely to have their first child by &#8220;accident&#8221; than people with more education and higher incomes.\u00a0 They were also more likely to have their first child as a teenager.\u00a0 These are the groups that we might expect, on average, to have less knowledge about birth control and less access to (especially more effective forms of) birth control.\u00a0 Given that our society is class segregated, members of these groups may also be surrounded by other people who &#8220;just happened&#8221; to have kids.\u00a0 The ideology of near-perfect control of reproduction, then, may not be as strong.\u00a0 This may also contribute to a willingness to <em>admit <\/em>that it &#8220;just happened,&#8221; instead of re-fashioning the introduction of parenting as a fully conscious choice.<\/p>\n<p>Hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/11\/for-whom-it-just-happens\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philip Cohen at Family Inequality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
