{"id":23459,"date":"2010-05-10T10:22:32","date_gmt":"2010-05-10T15:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=23459"},"modified":"2013-12-15T03:15:05","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T08:15:05","slug":"the-relationship-between-the-unemployment-rate-and-job-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/10\/the-relationship-between-the-unemployment-rate-and-job-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"The Relationship Between the Unemployment Rate and Job Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You might have heard that the U.S. added 290,000 jobs in April.\u00a0 At the same time, the unemployment rate rose!\u00a0 Bwhat!?<\/p>\n<p>The unemployment rate doesn&#8217;t measure how many people are unemployed.\u00a0 It sounds like it should, being that it includes the words &#8220;unemployment&#8221; and &#8220;rate&#8221; and all, but it doesn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Instead, the unemployment rate measures how many people are <em>looking <\/em>for jobs.\u00a0 When things are really bad, some people get discouraged and give up, or go to school instead, or stay home to take care of their kids and save day care money.<\/p>\n<p>So the number of jobs and the unemployment rate are not directly correlated.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/ezra-klein\/2010\/05\/when_bad_economic_news_is_good_1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ezra Klein<\/a> posted this visual:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/10\/the-relationship-between-the-unemployment-rate-and-job-growth\/jobandunem\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23461\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23461\" title=\"jobandunem\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/jobandunem.jpg\" width=\"443\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/jobandunem.jpg 610w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/jobandunem-500x310.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It shows unemployment rising as job growth remains negative, leveling off as (perhaps) people drop out of active job seeking, and than actually going up again there at the end in response to two months of solid job growth.<\/p>\n<p>So it turns out that, in this case, a rise in the unemployment rate is <em>good <\/em>news.\u00a0 It means some people are hopeful again.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
