{"id":2341,"date":"2008-09-01T00:00:34","date_gmt":"2008-09-01T05:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=2341"},"modified":"2017-09-16T16:25:14","modified_gmt":"2017-09-16T21:25:14","slug":"the-right-to-choose-a-gift-adapted-to-your-beauty-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/01\/the-right-to-choose-a-gift-adapted-to-your-beauty-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Right to Choose&#8230; A Gift Adapted to Your Beauty Concerns&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the contemporary U.S., the feminist movement has been so thoroughly intertwined with the pro-choice movement that the rhetoric of choice has become a common way to talk, more generally, about women&#8217;s liberation.\u00a0 And women&#8217;s liberation, as we have demonstrated (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/10\/if-only-women-spent-less-time-cooking\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/27\/commodifying-the-womens-movement\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/10\/22\/trivializing-womens-power\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/20\/commodification-of-womens-independence\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/29\/consumption-as-independence-more-right-hand-ring-ads\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/21\/virginia-slims-ads-commodifying-freedom\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/25\/1927-wimbledon-ad-using-womens-progress-to-sell\/\">here<\/a>), is frequently co-opted for the purposes of selling women all sorts of products (including those in decided conflict with mainstream feminism, like <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/25\/cosmetic-surgery-as-empowerment-take-two\/\">this one<\/a> and <a href=\"\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/21\/cosmetic-surgery-as-empowerment\/\" target=\"_self\">this one<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A reader, Tracy in Canada, saw these ads at Sears.\u00a0 In them, the phrase\u00a0&#8220;the right to choose&#8221; is used to invoke feminist ideals and applied to the right to select a &#8220;gift adapted to your beauty concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/08\/clarins_2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2343 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/08\/clarins_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"653\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NEW!
