{"id":23369,"date":"2010-05-18T11:45:53","date_gmt":"2010-05-18T16:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=23369"},"modified":"2013-12-15T02:58:10","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T07:58:10","slug":"why-are-insured-women-paying-for-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/18\/why-are-insured-women-paying-for-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Are Insured Women Paying for Abortions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dmitriy T.M. alerted us to a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/pubs\/US-Abortion-Patients.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report by the Guttmacher Institute<\/a> on the characteristics of women who have abortions.\u00a0 There&#8217;s lots of interesting data there, including the figure below that tells us how women are paying for their abortions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/18\/why-are-insured-women-paying-for-abortions\/3-43\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23370\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23370\" title=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/34.jpg\" width=\"513\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/34.jpg 599w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/34-500x317.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the study, 33% of the women in their study were uninsured, but 57% of them paid for their abortions out-of-pocket.\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n<p>I was able to track down two reasons.\u00a0\u00a0 First, medicaid only covers abortions in the cases of rape and incest or if a woman might die if she proceeds with the pregnancy.\u00a0 Second, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/statecenter\/spibs\/spib_RICA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">another report by Guttmacher<\/a>, 15 states deny or restrict the coverage of private insurance companies or the insurance plans of employees of the state:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/18\/why-are-insured-women-paying-for-abortions\/2-52\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23371\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23371\" title=\"2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/23.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/23.jpg 726w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/05\/23-500x306.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fact that non-therapeutic abortion is not covered by medicaid and by some private insurers, of course, hurts poor women and their families the most.\u00a0 While middle and upper class women can always find the money to make up for the gap in their insurance, poor women may not be able to do so.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
