People with Down<del datetime=\"2010-05-03T19:36:35+00:00\"><\/del>, however, are also more vulnerable than the general population to diabetes, leukemia, and infectious and autoimmune disease, and about 40% are born with heart defects.<\/p>\n<p>For most of history, then, the life expectancy of people with Down<del datetime=\"2010-05-03T19:36:35+00:00\"><\/del> was very low.\u00a0 But, with advances in knowledge and access to health care, life expectancy has risen dramatically&#8230; especially for white people:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/03\/the-life-expectancy-of-people-with-downs-syndrom\/m022a3f1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22879\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22879\" title=\"m022a3f1\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/04\/m022a3f1.gif\" width=\"563\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/04\/m022a3f1.gif 610w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/04\/m022a3f1-500x327.gif 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control explain that severity of Down does not vary by race, so most likely the cause of the gap in life expectancy is differences in the quantity and quality of health care.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Possibilities include differences in factors that may be associated with improved health in the general population such as socioeconomic status, education, community support, medical or surgical treatment of serious complications, or access to, use of, or quality of preventative health care.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is just one striking example of the wide racial gap in health outcomes and access to care. \u00a0We see data with similar patterns most everywhere we look. \u00a0As examples, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/01\/27\/race-and-pre-term-births\/\">pre-term births<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/11\/23\/racial-disparities-in-the-initiation-of-treatment-for-breast-cancer\/\">cancer diagnosis and treatment<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/18\/race-and-toxic-release-facilities\/\">likelihood of living near a toxic release facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm5022a3.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/a>, via <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/01\/childrens-extreme-health-inequality\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
