It\u2019s called <em>The New Nest<\/em>, by Sandra Iversen, with illustrations by Peter Paul Bajer. An innocent tale of Mama Bird and Papa Bird working together to build a nest from 20 twigs, straw and wool. At the end, Mama Bird is sitting on her eggs wearing pearls. Papa Bird is in a white collar and blue tie.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s curious to use men\u2019s and women\u2019s accessories (tie, necklace) to identify the gender of the couple, when the species itself provides a reasonable degree of sexual dimorphism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/male-female-housesparrows.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/male-female-housesparrows.jpg?w=343&amp;h=171\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s seems comparable to the <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/30\/the-bathroom-icon-has-no-clothes\/\">dimorphism<\/a> found in humans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/0\/00\/Americangothic.jpg\/250px-Americangothic.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/0\/00\/Americangothic.jpg\/250px-Americangothic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/30\/the-bathroom-icon-has-no-clothes\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/toilet-gender.jpg?w=231&amp;h=408&amp;h=245\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using both gendered clothes and bodies is not necessary, but together they are a powerful teaching tool for children, forming a lesson on the concordance of gender and sex differences: matching the different bodies with the appropriately different clothes.<\/p>\n<p>This book is actually featured in a write-up on teaching reading from the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/kto2literacy.wikispaces.com\/file\/view\/matching+texts+and+readers+rog+burton+2001.pdf\"><em>The Reading Teacher<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/new-nest-description.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/new-nest-description.jpg?w=500&amp;h=216\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what the intentions of the article writers were, but there is nothing in there about teaching about sexual dimorphism, or gender norms and practices.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Philip N.
