{"id":22835,"date":"2010-04-26T10:22:09","date_gmt":"2010-04-26T15:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=22835"},"modified":"2013-12-15T03:23:51","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T08:23:51","slug":"non-medical-reasons-for-a-rise-in-caesarean-sections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/04\/26\/non-medical-reasons-for-a-rise-in-caesarean-sections\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Medical Reasons for a Rise in Caesarean Sections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Caesarean sections &#8212; or C-sections, a surgery that involves making\u00a0incisions through a woman&#8217;s abdomen and uterus to deliver her baby &#8212; have been on the rise since the mid-1990s.\u00a0 Last month a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/24\/health\/24birth.html?emc=eta1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em> story<\/a>\u00a0reported that 2007 saw\u00a0the highest rate of Caesarean sections ever, 32 percent:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?attachment_id=22833\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22833  aligncenter\" title=\"1\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/04\/13.jpg\" width=\"231\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is primarily non-medical issues that are driving the increase.\u00a0 Many C-sections are performed because physicians fear lawsuits.\u00a0 In a survey of obstetricians, 29 percent admitted to performing C-sections for this reason.<\/p>\n<p>In other cases, mothers request that their labor be induced.\u00a0 She may have a grandmother in town or a military husband about to be deployed and she wants to have the child while her family can be present.\u00a0 Induced labor often fails and, so, C-sections are required.\u00a0 More insidiously (and not mentioned in the story), epidurals also tend to slow down labor and require induction.\u00a0 So the high rate of epidural use may also be contributing to the rise in C-sections.<\/p>\n<p>And, C-sections beget C-sections.\u00a0 Fewer and fewer women who have had a previous C-section are being allowed to attempt a vaginal birth.\u00a0 &#8220;Fewer than 10 percent of women who had Caesareans now have vaginal births, compared with 28.3 percent in 1996.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rates of C-section in the U.S. are higher than in most industrialized countries\u00a0but lower than in some developing countries.\u00a0 &#8220;&#8230;rates have soared to 40 percent in some developing countries in Latin America, and the rates in Puerto Rico and China are approaching 50 percent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And rates in the U.S. states vary by 16 percentage points.\u00a0 &#8220;The highest rates of Caesarean births were in New Jersey (38.3 percent) and Florida (37.2 percent), and the lowest were in Utah (22.2 percent) and Alaska (22.6 percent).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?attachment_id=22834\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22834  aligncenter\" title=\"2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/04\/21.jpg\" width=\"440\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was no discussion about why the rates among states in the U.S. would be so variable.\u00a0 Thoughts?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
