{"id":2229,"date":"2008-08-25T12:11:55","date_gmt":"2008-08-25T17:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=2229"},"modified":"2010-11-24T00:35:06","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T05:35:06","slug":"light-skinned-women-get-in-free-to-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/08\/25\/light-skinned-women-get-in-free-to-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Light-Skinned Woman Get in Free to Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am writing a lecture about the social construction of race\/ethnicity and wanted to show some pictures of people who are grouped into a single racial category in the U.S. but, in fact, show enormous variety in their skin tone, facial features, etc., so I quickly googled the phrase &#8220;African American skin tone.&#8221; And I found this flyer for a party at a club\u00a0where light-skinned\u00a0women would get in free\u00a0( found <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_QseH-QYr-Kk\/RxBYKCP9gqI\/AAAAAAAAHC8\/h5GTA2ZuPAA\/s320\/scan.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/carey2.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/is-it-sign-african-american-community.html&amp;h=320&amp;w=243&amp;sz=27&amp;hl=en&amp;start=9&amp;um=1&amp;usg=__Uw_EmL33QKTpRumEISgGfGRjRRo=&amp;tbnid=Olat-0uUYVy8ZM:&amp;tbnh=118&amp;tbnw=90&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dafrican%2Bamerican%2Bskin%2Btone%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/08\/skin-tone.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2230 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/08\/skin-tone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My reactions, in order: &#8220;<em>What the f**k???<\/em>&#8221; &#8220;This is clearly made up.&#8221; [After finding <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/media.commercialappeal.com\/mca\/content\/img\/photos\/2007\/10\/21\/22skin.jpeg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/www.commercialappeal.com\/news\/2007\/oct\/22\/radio-promo-stirs-skin-tone-debate\/&amp;h=851&amp;w=600&amp;sz=61&amp;hl=en&amp;start=1&amp;um=1&amp;usg=__zbTMsBvWsZhqpegPc1XLSG0b-KQ=&amp;tbnid=GupR63D-UYdreM:&amp;tbnh=145&amp;tbnw=102&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dafrican%2Bamerican%2Bskin%2Btone%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den\">this AP story<\/a> about it]: &#8220;Son of a <em>bitch!<\/em> It&#8217;s <em>real!<\/em>&#8221; Due to the outcry, the event was canceled and the event planner expressed sorrow and dismay that he would have offended anyone. Because who could have guessed this would be problematic?<\/p>\n<p>This image should be perfect for illustrating a number of topics, such as the way hierarchies often emerge <em>within<\/em> racial groups based on skin tone, facial features, etc., so that racial discrimination does not just occur between different groups, or the way that light skin is still prized in our society, even in racial\/ethnic minority populations.
