Apr. &#8217;10<\/span>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Neat, Cute, Ew, and Cool<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a comments thread a Reader, ckilgore, linked to her <a href=\"..\/2010\/03\/14\/wall-cabinet-refrigerator-1956\/\" target=\"_self\">grandma&#8217;s cabinet fridge from the &#8217;50s<\/a>.\u00a0 We added it, along with another example of an ad,\u00a0to our vintage ad for the same.<\/p>\n<p>We added a picture of pair-bonded female albatrosses to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/13\/destabilizing-heteronormativity\/\" target=\"_self\">our (adorable) post on gay animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tom M. sent in a billboard for Penthouse features a very suggestive&#8230; eye.\u00a0 We added it to our post featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/27\/non-subtle-sex-in-advertising\/\" target=\"_self\">ads with not-at-all-subtle visual sexual innuendo (NSFW)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I added an image of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/16\/the-effervesence-of-industrialization\/\" target=\"_self\">the Korean peninsula at night<\/a>, linked in\u00a0a comments thread by Brendon, to our post comparing the a map of the lights of the world at night and population density.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race-Related Updates<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We added <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/04\/default-avatars-a-collection\/\" target=\"_self\">a representation of &#8220;users&#8221; from WordPress that represented people as coming in different skin colors<\/a> to our post featuring default avatars.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica S. and Lucia M.M.\u00a0sent in links to companies selling pretend\u00a0teepees.\u00a0 We added it to our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/04\/05\/culturally-appropriating-native-americans-a-hands-on-approach-to-history\/\" target=\"_self\">American Indian-themed toys for kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Skada sent in another example in which <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/26\/plain-ol-and-african-american-brides-and-grooms\/\" target=\"_self\">white people are just people but black people are b-l-a-c-k, this time on Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gender-Related Updates<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We added <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/21\/pink-earplugs-for-your-beauty-sleep\/\" target=\"_self\">lollipops, identical deodorants, and disposable cameras to our post on pointlessly gendered products<\/a>.\u00a0 We also\u00a0added <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/14\/girls-verions-of-board-games\/\" target=\"_self\">a new &#8220;girl talk&#8221; version of Jenga<\/a> to our post on gendered versions of classic board games.\u00a0 The first two\u00a0were found by Sunlight Snow and the latter by Kathe H.<\/p>\n<p>We also added a &#8220;drama queen&#8221; sign for girls to our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/08\/05\/born-2-learn-to-find-gender-stereotypes-cute\/\">babies&#8217; and kids&#8217; items that reinforce the &#8220;girls as spoiled divas&#8221; stereotype<\/a>.\u00a0 Thanks to Coley for sending it in!<\/p>\n<p>Alex N. sent in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/09\/socialization-and-gendered-job-segregation\/\" target=\"_self\">a Fruit Loops commercial that genders doctors and nurses<\/a> (in the direction that you would expect) and we added it to a post on that topic.<\/p>\n<p>We updated our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/14\/adults-making-things-for-and-about-children\/\">scrapbooking sticker sets of words about boys and girls<\/a> with wall decals for boys and girls. In case you didn&#8217;t know, boys like hip-hop derived terms, while girls like any and all abbreviations.<\/p>\n<p>Lizz Q. sent us another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/14\/gender-and-anatomy\/\" target=\"_self\">an anatomical illustration that featured a man facing straight forward and a woman posing rather sexily<\/a>.\u00a0 We added it to our burgeoning collection.<\/p>\n<p>We added another great example of hygiene products being marketed to men by arguing that it enhances, instead of detracts from, their manliness.\u00a0 In this one, sent in by Lucia M.-M., <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/02\/marketing-shower-products-to-men\/\" target=\"_self\">truly manly body wash is contrasted with sissy manly body wash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sofia R. sent us another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/20\/this-stereotype-of-guys-as-dumb-immature-assholes-isnt-doing-anyone-any-favors\/\">Twix commercials that depict men as immature idiots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We added <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/14\/women-can-wear-mens-shirts-but-men-cannot-wear-womens\/\" target=\"_self\">a third example of shirts being sold in &#8220;unisex&#8221; and &#8220;women&#8217;s,&#8221;<\/a> sent in by Mindy J.<\/p>\n<p>Dmitriy T.M., Beth W., Abby D., and Jillian Y.\u00a0sent in links to a video game called RapeLay.\u00a0 We added it to a previous post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/15\/battle-raper-video-game\/\" target=\"_self\">rape-themed video games<\/a> (TRIGGER WARNING).<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
