{"id":21459,"date":"2010-03-25T10:57:02","date_gmt":"2010-03-25T15:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=21459"},"modified":"2013-12-15T03:43:39","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T08:43:39","slug":"when-pink-was-for-everyone-1950s-bathrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/25\/when-pink-was-for-everyone-1950s-bathrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"When Pink Was For Everyone: 1950s Bathrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/28\/extreme-radical-awesome-pictures-of-kids-n-their-um-stuff\/\" target=\"_self\">it&#8217;s certainly here now<\/a>, pink didn&#8217;t stabilize as a girls-only color <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/03\/pink-and-femininity\/\" target=\"_self\">until sometime in the 1950s<\/a>.\u00a0 During that decade, pink was the in-style color for bathrooms in residential homes.\u00a0 Notice that <a href=\"http:\/\/retrorenovation.com\/2010\/02\/15\/pink-was-not-always-the-color-for-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\">this ad<\/a>, sent in by Penny R., features a boy in a pink bathroom with no threat of emasculation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/25\/when-pink-was-for-everyone-1950s-bathrooms\/1954-kohler-pink-bathroom\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21462\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21462\" title=\"1954-kohler-pink-bathroom\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/03\/1954-kohler-pink-bathroom.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/03\/1954-kohler-pink-bathroom.jpg 460w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/03\/1954-kohler-pink-bathroom-383x500.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pam Kueber, at <a href=\"http:\/\/retrorenovation.com\/2009\/09\/28\/9-facts-about-vintage-pink-bathrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Retro Renovation<\/a>, estimates that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/savethepinkbathrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\">5 million pink bathrooms<\/a> went into the 20 million+ homes built in the United States from 1946-1966&#8230; 1 in 4 \u2014 at minimum \u2014 mid-century homes had a pink bathroom.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She quotes a 1958 <em>Electrical Merchandising<\/em> that said: \u201cIf forced to pick one color as leading this year, most industry men say pink is tops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pink is so strongly associated with women now that it hardly seems appropriate for a family bathroom.\u00a0 Kueber bemoans that home owners are taking sledge hammers to pink tiles and encourages us to preserve the bathrooms because we all look excellent in pink-tinted light.<\/p>\n<p>See men in pink (<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/21\/men-in-pink-two-velasquez-paintings\/\" target=\"_self\">then<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/10\/24\/race-class-and-gender\/\" target=\"_self\">now<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/17\/boys-wear-pink\/\" target=\"_self\">now<\/a>).<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
