{"id":21381,"date":"2010-03-08T10:12:07","date_gmt":"2010-03-08T15:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=21381"},"modified":"2013-12-15T03:54:36","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T08:54:36","slug":"policing-shilohs-gender-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/08\/policing-shilohs-gender-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender Non-Conformity is a Drag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes when we put up hyperfeminine clothes and toys for girls, people argue that no one <em>has <\/em>to buy those clothes, so there is no point in critiquing their existence.\u00a0 The implication is that all conformity to gendered expectations is voluntary (on the part of both mothers and their daughters).<\/p>\n<p>However, the recent furor over Shiloh Jolie-Pitts haircut and boyish outfit, sent in by Tara C., Cailin H., and Lindsay F., shows us that having a gender-consistent appearance isn&#8217;t <em>simply<\/em> voluntary; <em>when you don&#8217;t perform gender, other people will police your choices<\/em>.\u00a0 In this case, people are questioning whether she is harming her child by turning her &#8220;into A BOY?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/08\/policing-shilohs-gender-performance\/shilohlifeandstyle\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21383\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21383\" title=\"shilohlifeandstyle\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/03\/shilohlifeandstyle.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/03\/shilohlifeandstyle.jpg 445w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/03\/shilohlifeandstyle-372x500.jpg 372w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this case, of course, it&#8217;s mass media doing the policing (or inviting readers to do the policing).\u00a0 In the lives of non-celebrities, this same sort of policing is often done by family members, friends, and even strangers.\u00a0 For the non-conformist (parent), then, gender non-conformity can be a real drag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Image borrowed from <a href=\"http:\/\/dlisted.com\/node\/36309\" target=\"_blank\">DListed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
