<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We Promise&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Service with a smile, a cheerful greeting, a pleasant Hello.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We Mean It When We Say&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s no trouble at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We Want To Know&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;If you enjoyed your stay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because At Days Inn&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;We look forward to seeing you again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s our promise to you from every member of the Days Inn family.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(1) It is a nice example of the kind of emotional work that employees are required to do.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just about getting customers into rooms efficiently and politely, it&#8217;s about a putting on a shit-eating grin and kissing their asses.\u00a0 Or else you&#8217;re fired.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0 It&#8217;s also an example of a for-profit company calling itself a &#8220;family.&#8221;\u00a0 You are supposed to do things selflessly for your family, but you work at a job for money.\u00a0 Comparing a company to a family, I suspect, is one way to get employees to give to the company out of kinship-like duty instead of on contractual terms for money.\u00a0 This, of course, and ironically, lines the pockets of executives quite nicely.<\/p>\n<p>(3) The logic behind their use of quotation marks eludes me.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">NEW: <\/span><\/strong>I took these picture in a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Hollywood in October 2008.\u00a0 Close-ups and remarks below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg16781.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3197    aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg16781.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg16801.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3200  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg16801.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3198  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/10\/cimg16791.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Like in the Days Inn example, employees at Kaiser are to do more than simply do their job <em>effectively<\/em>, they must do it &#8220;pleasant[ly]&#8221; and with &#8220;care.&#8221;\u00a0 It is one thing to be instructed to &#8220;gather information with consideration for confidentiality,&#8221; and quite another to be asked to &#8220;convey trust and confidence.&#8221;\u00a0 Scholars of emotion work note that the emotional part of jobs is (1) rarely seen as a skill or (2) a toll that makes your job trying and is, therefore, (3) undercompensated.\u00a0 Yet, the ability to &#8220;convey trust and confidence&#8221; in strangers is certainly a special one and the health insurance employee that can do that is certainly valuable.\u00a0 Unfortunately, like with other type of care work (i.e., nursing, teaching), that &#8220;value&#8221;
