{"id":20612,"date":"2010-02-24T10:56:55","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T15:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=20612"},"modified":"2017-09-16T21:43:01","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T02:43:01","slug":"two-fun-facts-about-figure-skating-fashion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/24\/two-fun-facts-about-figure-skating-fashion\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Fun Facts About Figure Skating Fashion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fun Fact #1: <\/strong>Female figure skaters are required to wear skirts and men must wear &#8220;full-length trousers: no tights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Note: This isn&#8217;t true anymore; &#8220;this rule was repealed in 2004, allowing women to wear tights, trousers, or unitards&#8221; (http:\/\/www.frogsonice.com\/skateweb\/faq\/rules.shtml)<\/p>\n<p>Sonja Henie, of Norway, is credited with introducing the short skirt to women&#8217;s figure skating.\u00a0 She won gold medals in 1928, &#8217;32, and &#8217;36:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/24\/two-fun-facts-about-figure-skating-fashion\/capture3-20\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20618\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20618\" title=\"Capture3\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/Capture31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Abigail Feder, in her article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/pss\/1146356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8221; &#8216;A Radiant Smile from the Lovely Lady&#8217;: Overdetermined Femininity in &#8216;Ladies&#8217; Figure Skating&#8221;<\/a>, the International Skating Union (ISU) introduced a rule requiring that women wear skirts after they were scandalized by Debi Thomas&#8217; unitard at the 1988 Olympics:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/24\/two-fun-facts-about-figure-skating-fashion\/attachment\/50371184\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20619\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20619\" title=\"50371184\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/50371184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/50371184.jpg 594w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/50371184-500x336.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/cache4.asset-cache.net\/xc\/50371184.jpg?v=1&amp;c=IWSAsset&amp;k=2&amp;d=E41C9FE5C4AA0A148F7BDE495BD797EB5C1277652B6C0122FC9D4EFDF0ABFC73B01E70F2B3269972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/pictureshow\/2010\/02\/figure_skating_fashion_through.html?ft=1&amp;f=97635953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR slide show<\/a> explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today, according to the ISU, figure skating&#8217;s governing body, &#8220;Ladies must wear a skirt. The Ladies dress must not give the effect of excessive nudity inappropriate for an athletic sport. Men must wear full-length trousers: no tights are allowed and the man&#8217;s costume may not be sleeveless.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, just to be clear, the performance of femininity and masculinity, as defined by the ISU, is <em>required <\/em>if one is to be a competitive figure skater&#8230; all skills aside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fun Fact #2: <\/strong>People used to make their costumes by hand; today they are high fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The 1976 Olympics were the last in which figure skating costumes were mostly handmade.\u00a0 Here Dorothy Hamill competes in a costume her mother made for $75:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/24\/two-fun-facts-about-figure-skating-fashion\/capture2-37\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20615\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20615\" title=\"Capture2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/Capture21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, costumes frequently cost thousands of dollars.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan both competed in Vera Wang (who, in 2009, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeskate.com\/skate\/2008\/12\/vera-wang-induction-us-figure-skating-hall-of-fame.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inducted in the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame for her designs<\/a>).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.mspmag.com\/styleparlor\/2008\/01\/fashion-skater-style.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerrigan<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/24\/two-fun-facts-about-figure-skating-fashion\/kerr\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20616\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20616\" title=\"kerr\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/kerr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
