{"id":20459,"date":"2010-02-18T10:20:19","date_gmt":"2010-02-18T15:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=20459"},"modified":"2013-12-15T04:07:23","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T09:07:23","slug":"re-framing-the-abortion-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/18\/re-framing-the-abortion-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-Framing the Abortion Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emily D., Jeff S., and Dmitriy T.M. have all sent in links to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/06\/us\/06abortion.html?emc=eta1\" target=\"_blank\">a series of billboards<\/a>, recently put up in Atlanta, that suggest that abortion is a form of genocide against African Americans:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/18\/re-framing-the-abortion-debate\/06abortion_ca0-popup-v2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20461\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20461\" title=\"06abortion_CA0-popup-v2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/06abortion_CA0-popup-v2.jpg\" width=\"552\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/06abortion_CA0-popup-v2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/06abortion_CA0-popup-v2-500x327.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve posted before on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/28\/reproductive-politics-race-and-obama\/\" target=\"_self\">the argument that abortion should be made illegal because it is used disproportionately against the children of Black mothers<\/a>.\u00a0 There are good reasons to both credit and discredit this argument, but I&#8217;d like to point out something a bit different.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that abortion is highly politicized in the United States, deeply connected to feminism (but not race or class movements), and framed as a contest between &#8220;life&#8221; and &#8220;choice&#8221; seems natural to most Americans. Indeed, it&#8217;s hard for many Americans to imagine a world in which the procedure is less politicized or debated differently.\u00a0 But the politics of abortion in the U.S. is not the only kind of abortion politics that could exist.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssc.wisc.edu\/~mferree\/\" target=\"_blank\">Myra Marx Ferree<\/a>&#8216;s award-winning book comparing abortion politics in the U.S. and Germany, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/catalogue\/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521793841\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Shaping Abortion Discourse<\/em><\/a>, is a great example (with Gamson, Gerhards, and Rucht).<\/p>\n<p>So, whether you agree or disagree with the claims in these billboards, they nicely jolt us out of our acceptance of abortion politics as is.\u00a0 How might thinking about abortion as a race issue or a class issue change the debate?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NEW! (Mar. &#8217;10):<\/strong><\/span> Dmitriy T.M. let us know about this billboard in Poland, sponsored by the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, that connects abortion to Hitler (found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opposingviews.com\/i\/controversial-hitler-abortion-billboard-goes-up-graphic-image\" target=\"_blank\">Opposing Views<\/a>). The text reads, &#8220;Abortion for Polish women introduced by Hitler on March 9, 1943.&#8221; It was put up in time for International Women&#8217;s Day on March 8th.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m putting it after the jump&#8211;it has images of bloody fetuses and might not be safe for some workplaces.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s421.photobucket.com\/albums\/pp297\/gwensharp\/Soc%20Images\/?action=view&amp;current=hitler.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Photobucket\" src=\"http:\/\/i421.photobucket.com\/albums\/pp297\/gwensharp\/Soc%20Images\/hitler.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
