{"id":20352,"date":"2010-02-14T10:07:14","date_gmt":"2010-02-14T15:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=20352"},"modified":"2012-07-25T01:24:43","modified_gmt":"2012-07-25T06:24:43","slug":"valentines-day-and-heteronormativity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/14\/valentines-day-and-heteronormativity\/","title":{"rendered":"Valentine&#8217;s Day Heteronormativity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Roisin O&#8217;R. sent in a great example of the heteronormativity pervasive in Valentine&#8217;s Day marketing.\u00a0 These &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/chocolate-alchemist\/his---hers-dark-chocolate-dip-n-stir\/\" target=\"_blank\">dark chocolate dippers<\/a>&#8221; are designed to be dipped into hot milk and melted into hot chocolate.\u00a0 Seeing them at a UK health food store, Roisin noticed that they came packaged in boy-girl sets:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/14\/valentines-day-and-heteronormativity\/214883-his-n-hers-dip-stir\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20354\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20354\" title=\"214883-his-n-hers-dip-stir\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/214883-his-n-hers-dip-stir.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"489\" \/><\/a>She sent a note to the company and asked why they don&#8217;t just sell the sticks individually so that the product would be open to gay and lesbian couples (and, for that matter, polyamorous relationships or people who just want to include their kids or grandma).\u00a0 Roisin writes that the company said that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;they were &#8220;following the market&#8221; and if I knew of any stores that would want &#8220;his n his or hers n hers&#8221; to let them know.
