{"id":20194,"date":"2010-02-10T10:40:40","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T15:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=20194"},"modified":"2017-09-16T21:25:09","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T02:25:09","slug":"the-paradox-of-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/10\/the-paradox-of-black-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"The Paradox of Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dmitriy T.M. and Claire C. sent in a link to a photo of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/17\/frying-chicken-and-collard-greens-headline-black-history-month-themed-flier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an NBC cafeteria menu in honor of Black History Month<\/a> (that&#8217;d be February) that featured stereotypical African-American foods:<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/10\/the-paradox-of-black-history-month\/nbc-black-history-month\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20198\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20198\" title=\"NBC-BLACK-HISTORY-MONTH\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/NBC-BLACK-HISTORY-MONTH.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/NBC-BLACK-HISTORY-MONTH.jpg 570w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/NBC-BLACK-HISTORY-MONTH-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/NBC-BLACK-HISTORY-MONTH-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/17\/frying-chicken-and-collard-greens-headline-black-history-month-themed-flier\/\" target=\"_self\">It&#8217;s not the first time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many argued that the menu was offensive because it reproduced stereotypes, but I think an interview (no longer available) with the chef who devised the menu complicated the story a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I think the main problem here is that Americans live in a racist society and so <em>we have no idea how to celebrate Black History Month<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/02\/celebrate-black-history-month-by-relaxing-your-hair\/\" target=\"_self\">how about with relaxer?<\/a>). \u00a0 The rest of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/16\/obama-bucks-caricatures-of-barack-obama\/\" target=\"_self\">we make fun of black people for eating fried chicken<\/a>. And yet, these are traditional Black southern dishes. So how exactly do we celebrate the holiday? \u00a0 Do we pretend to valorize the same traditions that we make fun of during the rest of the year?\u00a0 It makes no sense!\u00a0 But it makes no sense because <em>we&#8217;re still racist<\/em>.\u00a0 And we need a Black History Month because <em>we&#8217;re still racist<\/em>.\u00a0 So, what to do!?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the lesson to take from all of this is:\u00a0 Undermining racism is hard work. \u00a0 A month dedicated to Black history is <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/08\/03\/white-privilege\/\" target=\"_self\">a (flesh-colored) band aid<\/a>, at best.\u00a0 If we don&#8217;t do the other stuff (<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/20\/percentage-of-children-with-a-parent-in-prison-by-race\/\" target=\"_self\">e.g.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/24\/net-worth-you-werent-counting-on-your-equity-were-you\/\" target=\"_self\">challenging<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/25\/racial-wealthincome-gap\/\" target=\"_self\">the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/22\/concentrations-of-rural-poverty\/\" target=\"_self\">web<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/02\/1-in-31\/\" target=\"_self\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/09\/guest-post-fail-to-understand-when-non-white-people-distrust-the-police\/\" target=\"_self\">racist<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/21\/recovering-from-a-financial-loss\/\" target=\"_self\">institutions<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/14\/college-enrollment-and-completion-the-intersectionality-of-class-race-and-gender\/\" target=\"_self\">that<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/04\/race-and-the-economic-downturn\/\" target=\"_self\">preserve<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/08\/02\/blackwhite-disparities-in-prison-sentences\/\" target=\"_self\">class<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/14\/race-criminal-background-and-employment\/\" target=\"_self\">and<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/16\/male-workers-in-good-jobs-1979-and-2008\/\" target=\"_self\">race<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/07\/joblessness-and-the-intersection-of-class-and-race\/\" target=\"_self\">privilege<\/a>), then no amount of fried chicken will make the difference.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
