{"id":20171,"date":"2010-02-10T10:55:09","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T15:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=20171"},"modified":"2013-12-15T04:12:21","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T09:12:21","slug":"orientalism-and-the-consumption-of-the-other","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/10\/orientalism-and-the-consumption-of-the-other\/","title":{"rendered":"Orientalism and the Consumption of the Other"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These days, if you live in the West, thinking about Asia&#8211;whether it be Chinese labor, Japanese inventions, Indian demographics, or Korean politics&#8211;is taken-for-granted as part of knowing about the world.\u00a0 During the colonial era, however, when &#8220;mass media&#8221; was largely limited to print, Americans and Europeans experienced being more-or-less <em>newly <\/em>introduced to different cultures.\u00a0 This spurred an entire industry in which &#8220;Africa,&#8221; &#8220;the Orient,&#8221; and the &#8220;Middle East&#8221; were presented to curious Westerners.\u00a0 These presentations, more often than not, were objectifying.\u00a0 Westerners were able to enjoy reveling in the seemingly bizarre and unfamiliar people and customs of these Other places (with a capital &#8220;O&#8221;), as if Other kinds of people were new species of animals over which to fawn.\u00a0 This accumulation of documents with which the average Westerner could try to understand their &#8220;foreign&#8221; counterparts were produced not only by travel writers, but anthropologists, artists, imperial employees, novelists, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Edward Said, in his powerfully influential book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Orientalism-Edward-W-Said\/dp\/039474067X\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Orientalism<\/em><\/a>, first articulated the way that efforts of these actors coalesced into a mythology about &#8220;the Orient.&#8221;\u00a0 A mythology in which the East and the West were set in opposition and the East was used by the West to define its own, superior identity.<\/p>\n<p>Katrin sent in one example of this traffic in Orientalism.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a postcard from the early 1900s that depicts a &#8220;Burmese Beauty.&#8221;\u00a0 It was painted by Robert Talbot Kelly and originally published in his book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/30064\/30064-h\/30064-h.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Burma<\/em><\/a> (1905).\u00a0 The caption reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Burmese Beauty. The Burmese women are generally attractive, much more so than the men, and present a pretty picture as they walk about attired in their gaily coloured skirts and shaded by their quaint umbrellas. All the ladies smoke in Burma, large cigars being the favourite &#8216;weed.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/10\/orientalism-and-the-consumption-of-the-other\/burmese-beauty-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20173\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20173\" title=\"burmese-beauty-2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/burmese-beauty-2.jpg\" objects for a (distant) touristic gaze, kind of like <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/20\/the-dancing-hawaiian-girl-at-your-service\/\" target=\"_self\">the generic mostly-naked-woman-in-tropical-paradise postcard<\/a> that we still see today.\u00a0 More examples of colonial era Orientalist postcards depicting Burma (from <a
