to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageadbrowser.com\/guns-ads\" target=\"_blank\">a vintage collection of gun advertising<\/a>, organized by decade, that shows some interesting trends.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1900s and 1910s, gun advertising frequently simply touted the benefits of the gun itself, ignoring completely any indication as to what the gun was for:<\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the &#8217;20s and &#8217;30s, gun advertising more frequently involved a hunting or pest-reduction theme:<\/p>\n<p><a 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This theme continued through the 40s, but alongside a new theme, war (i.e., World War II):<\/p>\n<p><a 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, in the 1960s, the war theme disappeared and the hunting theme continued, this time with a new twist. Instead of just hunting for food (and sport) or to protect your property, ads included the hunting of exotic game solely for sport:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/17\/historical-trends-in-gun-advertising\/601game\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20026\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20026\" title=\"601game\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/601game.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/601game.jpg 420w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/601game-353x500.jpg 353w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/17\/historical-trends-in-gun-advertising\/602game\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20027\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20027\" title=\"602game\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/602game.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/602game.jpg 420w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/602game-362x499.jpg 362w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/02\/17\/historical-trends-in-gun-advertising\/603game\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20028\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20028\" title=\"603game\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/603game.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/603game.jpg 420w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/02\/603game-365x499.jpg 365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since the 1990s, we&#8217;ve seen a new kind of gun advertising in which self-defense is the selling point.\u00a0 Interestingly, this new marketing strategy is designed to bring in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/29\/marketing-guns-to-women\/\" target=\"_self\">women<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/06\/equal-opportunity-gun-ownership\/\" target=\"_self\">gays and lesbians, people of color, and kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, if you are unfortunate enough to be assaulted, carrying a gun makes it <a href=\"http:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/full\/10.2105\/AJPH.2008.143099\" target=\"_blank\">more likely<\/a> that you&#8217;ll be shot in the encounter.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
