Re-posted in honor of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/womenshistorymonth.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women\u2019s History Month<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/nypl.org\/blog\/2010\/01\/24\/clothing-choices-1941-and-today\" target=\"_blank\">New York Public Library<\/a> posted a page from the first issue (September 1941) of <em>Design for Living: The Magazine for Young Moderns<\/em> that I thought was sorta neat for bringing some perspective to the increase in the amount and variety of clothing we take as normal today&#8211;but also, to my relief, the acceptance of a more casual style of dress. The magazine conducted a poll of women at a number of colleges throughout the U.S. about how many of various articles of clothing they owned. Here&#8217;s a visual\u00a0showing the school where women reported the highest and lowest averages (the top item is a dickey, not a shirt):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/111.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54261\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/111.jpg\" width=\"615\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/111.jpg 683w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/111-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/111-500x505.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overall the women reported spending an average of $240.33 per year on clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Hats for women were apparently well on their way out of fashion:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/31\/what-was-in-the-1941-college-womans-closet\/picture-2-17\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19869\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19869 aligncenter\" title=\"Picture 2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-23-500x77.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-23-500x77.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-23.png 874w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine a magazine aimed at college women today implying that you might be able to get away with only three or four pairs of shoes, even if that&#8217;s what women reported?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/31\/what-was-in-the-1941-college-womans-closet\/picture-3-15\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19870\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19870 aligncenter\" title=\"Picture 3\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-32-500x59.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"59\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-32-500x59.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-32.png 877w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the article they bring readers&#8217; attention to the fact that they used a sample:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/31\/what-was-in-the-1941-college-womans-closet\/picture-1-33\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19871\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-19871\" title=\"Picture 1\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-14-500x40.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-14-500x40.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Picture-14.png 872w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t help but find it rather charming that a popular magazine would even bother to clarify anything about their <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/30\/common-mistakes-in-polling-and-poll-results\/\">polling methods<\/a>.
